Summary: stream of conscious memorybox writings on the topic of Fourth Street.

Asthma

memories

  1. 1

my earliest memories of the street itself come from being driving to the Copley Hospital (when it was still off of Lincoln Ave) emergency room. I would have been young (3ish) and on my way because of an asthma attack. These trips would be a regular event for me and almost always in the middle of the night.

my dad would drive me to the hospital where we’d wait in the waiting room for hours - back in the times when they still allowed you to smoke inside of the hospital. which, of course, made my breathing even worse.

finally, in the room i’d typically be given an adrenaline shot and then a breathing treatment with the type of medicine eluding me now. nowadays it’s albuterol but for back then, i’m not sure.

for home maintenance and recovery i’d be given what seemed like gallons of theolair.

Buy-Rite

memories

  1. 1

down the street there was a small grocery store called Buy-Rite. it was part of the centrella brand of grocers and there was at least one more location in aurora on illinois ave. on the west side. (more later)

the memories of this store are two-fold. on the one hand there are the moments that i was driven through their parking lot on the way to the hospital (copley was right behind it) and the other memories are of actual shopping.

as a kid two things impressed me - the single rolls of wrapped toilet paper and the valley maid chocolate malted chip ice cream. Valley Maid being a local ice cream brand that is now out of business (for some years) i am left with a void in my life (ie. the ice cream since no one else makes that combination that i’m aware of)

there was an employee there that always sorta creeped me out but in hindsight is a very tragic figure. she always wore makeup that dated from the 70s and was always there. of course the rumors flew as to her makeup and behavior (mostly along the lines of her being crazy)

after buy-rite went out of business the location is still being used as a small grocery store but has exchanged hands several times over the last 10 years.

Masonic Temple

aside from being a constant in huge, memorable buildings around Aurora the only memories i have of this place are from early 1980s sons of norway fish dinners there.
